Electronic location of Septic Tank lids – Sometimes it is necessary to locate the Septic Tank lids electronically.  After exhausting all other methods to locate the tank lids manually, we can use our electronic tank lid locating device for an additional fee.  The use of the electronic locator is a last resort.  The owner is a master at finding the lids and very rarely do we have to use this device.

If you have chosen to locate and dig up the lids to your Septic Tank prior to your appointment date, the following information, pictures and diagrams will be helpful in determining where to start digging if you do not have risers installed (Highly Recommended) on your tank lids.  There are many different configuration when it comes to Septic Tank Lids…. This will be determined by the age of your Septic System, the tank manufacturer and the installation company who installed the Septic System.

The following pictures and drawings will help you determine how your septic tank lids are configured.

(Do not hesitate to call for assistance, if you have questions)

1975 and earlier (Single Compartment)

If your home was built in this time frame and there has not been a replacement done of the system, then most likely your Septic Tank will be a single compartment tank as shown below.

(This tank will have one main lid in the center and two smaller baffle lids on both ends of the tank as shown in the diagram below)  The main lid will be approximately 24″ around either square or round.  The two baffle lids are approximately 6 – 8″ around.  It is important to uncover the baffle lids as well as the main lid so that we can clean the inlet and check the integrity of the outlet.

1975 – 1980 to Present (Two Compartment)

If your home was built in this time frame, then most likely your Septic Tank will be a 2 compartment tank and will have a minimum of 2 24″ lids to uncover.  This type of Septic Tank can have 2 main 24″ lids that include baffle access within the big lids and center crossover lid (crossover is not needed to service the tank) as shown in the 1st diagram below or the tank will have 2 main 24″  lids and 2 smaller Baffle lids at both ends of tank directly above the inlet and outlet baffle as shown in the 2nd diagram below.

You will be looking for 2 lids like these if there are risers on the tank, if the tank is not risered, you will find 2 concrete lids like the 3rd picture below ~ Riser lids can be below the surface which means you will be looking for fiberglass lids below the surface like the 1st & 2nd picture below.

1990 to Present (Presure Distribution System – Two Compartment Tank with Pump Tank)

Installed with a Pressure Distribution System – This tank will have only one main lid in the center of the tank.  If you are having your your routine 3 year Septic Tank Pumping Service done then it is NOT necessary to pump the pump tank but every other Septic Tank Pumping service.  If you are having a Real Estate Sale Inspection & Pumping done then you must locate and uncover the Pump Tank.  It IS required to pump out and inspect the pump tank and effluent pump when we are certifying the Septic system for a sale.

If the pump Tank and Septic tanks are set side by side then the lid will be located on one side side of the Septic Tank, most likely forming a triangle lid formation as shown in the 2nd picture below… this Pressure System is risered to the surface so digging is not necessary but if they were not it would be challenging to pinpoint the location of all three lids.
